“Help Them Find Their Voice”
Imagine living in a world where you can’t communicate. A world where no one can understand you and every word you want to say takes months of practice to perfect. Now imagine being told that this world is the one your child is living in, yet no one can explain why. This is the reality for children that struggle with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). I have decided to coordinate this walk in honor of my 2 year old son Kellan, and to support all the children who struggle daily with childhood apraxia of speech. I hope to raise awareness about this rare disorder that affects 1 in 1,000 children.
CAS is a neurological base motor-speech disorder which causes children to have difficulty making sounds, syllables and words. These children know exactly what they want to say, but there is a problem getting the signals needed to move the child’s lips, jaw, and tongue in order to produce speech. Children with CAS require frequent and intensive speech therapy designed to improve the planning, sequencing, and coordination of movements for speech.
Every child that struggles with CAS deserves the chance to speak and be understood. With the right research and education, this is possible. All proceeds from the walk will support CASANA in order to continue the much needed programs and research of CAS. Let's help these children find their voices!
Join us Saturday October 13th 2012 to support those families who live with this reality. You can show your support as a team, walker, sponsor , or just by making a donation.
